An Emperor’s Dream City! One of the most extraordinary medieval cities of India, the imperial Fathepur Sikri. The founding of Fatehpur Sikri reads like a fairytale. When all else had failed, Emperor Akbar came here in search of the renowned Sufi mystic. Sheikh Salim Chishti, to ask his blessing for a son. His prayer was heard, and soon a son was born. In honor of the saint, Akbar named prince Salim and vowed to find a new city. And so Fathepur Sikri, a magnificent new city rose on the craggy hills, 40- km from Agra.
The magnificent city ghost city was the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1571 to 1585, during the reign of Emperor Akbar. Today Fathepur Sikri is a deserted, phantom city. But the inner citadel is immaculately preserved. Its walls, palaces, baths, royal mint courts and gardens still stand splendidly in honor of the great visionary emperor. The heart of the set in the great courtyard of the Royal Mosque, devotees still come in thousands to offer flowers, tie a thread in the latticed screens and pray for a gift. Sufi music is an added treat here.
