Shah Jahan's elegant citadel, constructed of red sandstone, was built from 1638 – 1648, for a period of ten years, at the eastern extreme of the walled city, along with the riverfront of Yamuna. The red sandstone wall of Red Fort, more popularly known as the Lal Quila, extends for 2 Kms and varies in height from 18 mts on the riverside to 332 mts on the city side. This imposing fort was symbolic of heights of the Mughal Empire. Shah Jahan started construction of the massive fort, but he never completely moved his capital from Agra to his new city of Shahjahanabad in Delhi because he was deposed and imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb. This could he never truly enjoy the fruits of his labor. The Prime Minister of India addresses the country and unfolds the national flag every year on 15th August – Independence Day.
