Agra Fort was started by Akbar between 1565 and 1573. It is located on the west bank of the Jumna River, nearly 2km upstream from the Taj Mahal. Akbar made the fort of sandstone; his grandson Shah Jahan, the fabricator of the Taj Mahal, constructed palaces of white marble inward the fort itself. Shah Jahan was jailed in Agra Fort following the overthrow of his son, Aurangzeb, and died in 1657. Agra Fort is entered today at the south end, through a low outer wall and entrance built by Aurangzeb. Tourists then pass in progression through two of Akbar's gates, the Amar Singh and the Akbari, before certainly gaining admittance to the fort proper.
